Regional robotic soccer competition to accelerate robotics development
International Robocup league top teams at start of regional competition
Eindhoven - The top of the international Robocup league will be playing various demonstration games on Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd of October. This event will kick-off the first season in the entirely new and unique regional robotic soccer competition. The games and all related activities will take place on the premises of the University of Technology Eindhoven and are open to visitors.
With this new regional competition, Philips Applied Technologies and the University of Technology Eindhoven, who are organizing this event, aim to accelerate the developments in the area of robotics. "The people behind the robot teams are all working on their own locations to improve their team of robots. They only meet once or twice a year to play against each other during international championships. When we work together, however, we can use each other’s strengths. The fact that we are located nearby offers a great advantage to test and play against each other. Exchanging knowledge is the main purpose," says initiator of this event Bart Dirkx of the Eindhoven Philips Robocup team. Regional, but international, is what Dirkx has in mind for the competition. "Participants come from Delft, Twente, Eindhoven, Aken, and Leuven. We want to growth towards open innovation where we work on the same goal. To encourage this, we may start working with an ‘open source platform’: an operating system with a public source code so that everyone can apply improvements."
Autonomous, intelligent robots
During the official start, the 2005 European champion Tribots from Osnabrück, Germany, will compete against the Philips Robocup Team from Eindhoven, the bronze medal winners of the World Championships Robocup 2005. Apart from regular games, visitors can also watch competence exercises and penalty rounds. Official commentary will guarantee two exciting days.
